The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is welcoming new members. These individuals are joining from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and other political platforms.
Bolaji Abdullahi is the ADC National Publicity Secretary. He described these defectors as “political refugees.” They come from parties facing internal instability. These individuals were often sidelined or displaced by internal conflicts.
Speaking to journalists, Abdullahi explained a key party safeguard. The ADC constitution prevents individuals or groups from dominating the party. This measure was introduced after observing failures in other political organisations.
“We are very aware of what brought us here,” he stated. “These are internal contradictions within those parties.”
Abdullahi added, “That is why, in building ADC, we are starting with a different political philosophy. We have leaders, yes. But they cannot claim to control the party.”
“We are mindful of our origins. We also remember what destabilised other political parties,” he concluded.
Abdullahi explained that unchecked ambition has ruined many political parties. He noted that ADC has successfully avoided such pitfalls. Currently, no member has publicly declared bids for governorship, Senate, or the presidency.
“Even those who want to be president, it’s just a rumour. Nobody has officially declared their intention,” he remarked.
“We are trying to impose this kind of discipline on ourselves. This allows us to build a political party first. After establishing this party, it will accommodate everyone’s ambition,” he stated.
The ADC spokesman emphasised the party’s goal. It aims to maintain strong internal unity. It also remains vigilant against any external interference. This ensures steady growth, capable of supporting every member’s future aspirations.
Furthermore, Abdullahi insisted that discussions on zoning are not currently on the party’s agenda.
He said the opposition platform’s immediate focus is clear. It involves building a strong and credible opposition. Nigerians must be able to trust this opposition.
