Abuja, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially inaugurated its new national secretariat in Abuja. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has addressed suggestions that this move signals a shift in opposition alignments.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Monday, November 17, Abdullahi clarified the situation. He noted that the building, previously occupied by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his presidential campaign, now belongs entirely to the ADC. He stressed that the acquisition holds no political undertones.
ADC’s New Home: A Clear Distinction from Atiku’s Past Tenancy
“Atiku was formerly the tenant of this building, which served as his presidential campaign office. However, his tenancy has expired,” Abdullahi explained. “The African Democratic Congress is now the tenant here. This move indicates nothing more. It is unrelated to any broader political movement. This is solely an ADC decision.”
Abdullahi further highlighted the party leadership’s commitment. Under Senator David Mark, the ADC remains dedicated to ensuring fairness and promoting internal cohesion. This commitment comes ahead of its crucial February congresses.
“The ADC leadership has clearly stated its intention to be fair to all members,” he noted. “The root cause of crises often seen in other parties is injustice and a lack of fairness.”
He added that the ADC has largely managed to keep internal disagreements minimal. The party, he affirmed, will continue to uphold the principles that initially brought the coalition together.
“For instance, the chairman promised all legacy chairmen across the country that none would be sidelined. We have kept our word; they remain in their positions. Therefore, if any issue arises, we will address it promptly,” Abdullahi stated.
Expectations for El-Rufai and Peter Obi within the Coalition
Addressing questions about the roles of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Abdullahi indicated a clearer path forward. He stated that the party expects definitive decisions now that the Anambra election has concluded.
“You are aware that both former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and His Excellency Peter Obi were given until the end of the Anambra election to make their decision,” Abdullahi reminded. “Now that the election is over, we anticipate that everyone will fully reunite with the coalition.”
He confirmed that, at present, the status of any leadership positions remains unchanged from the original arrangement within the ADC coalition.
Notably, both Atiku and Peter Obi, key opposition figures the ADC has been keen to court for full membership, were absent from the event.
Senator David Mark: Shaping Nigeria’s Political Future
Speaking to party faithful, ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, described the new secretariat as a tangible declaration. He called it a symbol of the coalition’s ambition to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
“It serves as a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation,” he affirmed. “This ADC coalition is a historic necessity, born from the people’s desire for good governance, improved accountability, and a stronger democracy.”
Mark added that the complex would function as the central operational hub. It will be used for generating ideas, refining strategies, and nurturing emerging political leaders.
“From within these walls, we will continue to champion policies that uplift communities,” he stated. “We will also strengthen institutions and safeguard the democratic foundations upon which our republic stands.”
ADC’s Push for Full Alignment Ahead of 2027
Since launching its opposition coalition in July, the ADC has consistently urged aligned political figures to formally resign from their current party platforms and register with the ADC. This directive has, however, faced some resistance from several major players.
The party maintains that full alignment is crucial. It believes this unity is necessary if the opposition hopes to mount a formidable challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections.
