The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected a recent All Progressives Congress (APC) strategy. The APC seeks to secure bloc votes for President Bola Tinubu from the South and North-Central regions. Both parties called these efforts “empty” ahead of the 2027 general election.
ADC Highlights Governors’ Poor Performance
An ADC official, Abdullahi, expressed significant concerns. He noted the APC National Chairman himself publicly admitted many party governors failed to deliver good governance. This failure occurred despite receiving unprecedented revenue.
Abdullahi questioned the APC’s confidence in these governors. He stressed that many would struggle to convince their constituents in the upcoming election.
“They are just deluding themselves,” he stated. “They know they have lost the people’s trust. This is why they create an impression of controlling more states.”
He recalled the APC chairman’s remarks about governors’ poor performance. People should hold them accountable, Abdullahi added. “These governors collected more money than most past governments. Yet, they show little for it.”
“Are these the same governors they rely on to win in 2027?” Abdullahi asked. “How many can truly persuade their people to follow them?”
Abdullahi also commented on recent defections to the APC. He argued these moves are driven by personal ambition. They do not signify genuine support for the party’s principles.
“Governors joining their party have their own reasons,” he explained. “It is not because they believe in the APC. We are not troubled by these defections.”
PDP Warns Against Threat to Democracy
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, shared similar sentiments. He accused the APC of trying to stifle opposition parties. This, he warned, poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles. These actions are happening ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ememobong underscored the vital role of opposition parties. They are essential for strengthening democratic governance. He insisted they must be allowed to thrive.
“The APC aims to ensure many opposition parties lack candidates in 2027,” he stated. “This approach is harmful to our democracy.”
He urged the ruling party to respect the people’s ultimate choice of leadership. “Democracy flourishes when viable, diverse political parties engage in healthy competition,” Ememobong concluded.
