The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Delta State has officially inaugurated its new committee. The party declared a firm intention to challenge President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. This challenge is set for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
ADC’s Mandate for Delta
The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday in Asaba. There, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, outlined the committee’s core mandate. He stated that the new body would establish functional party offices across Delta State. These offices will cover local government areas, wards, and units. This initiative also includes extensive grassroots sensitisation efforts. Its goal is to promote the ADC and familiarize the public with its agenda.
Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC’s mission spans from the federal to the state level. It centers on restoring justice, equity, and transparency to governance.
“We in ADC understand that Nigeria’s current challenges stem from the politics played over the years,” Abdullahi stated. “To steer Nigeria onto a new path, and ensure politics serves the people, we must embrace a different approach. The ADC is committed to ensuring justice, equity, and transparency in all its dealings. These values, we believe, have been largely absent from Nigerian politics. The ADC aims to reintroduce them as we work towards defeating President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming election.”
Critique of Delta’s Development and Current Administration
The ADC spokesperson also expressed concern over Delta State’s development. This is despite its significant resources. Abdullahi recounted his experience as a former Federal Minister. He visited the state capital years ago. “Driving from the airport, I was surprised that little appeared to have changed,” he noted. He questioned why a state as richly endowed as Delta has seen such minimal transformation. “This suggests that the government has not effectively served its people,” he added.
He drew parallels with other states. These states, despite having fewer resources than Delta, show consistent year-on-year development. “I have not witnessed similar progress here,” Abdullahi lamented. He affirmed that an ADC government would prioritize public service. It would hold elected officials accountable to the people.
Abdullahi critically assessed the performance of the current administration in the state. He questioned, “Has the ruling party improved the lives of residents in the last two and a half years they have been in power? If the answer is no, then the African Democratic Congress is the only viable option left to take over Delta State.”
He further described the ADC as Nigeria’s most credible opposition party. Its mission, he added, extends beyond conventional politics. It embodies a national rescue vision for all ordinary Nigerians.
Leadership’s Charge and Encouragement
Earlier, the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, addressed the Transition Management Committee. He was represented by Mr. Babachir Lawal. Mark urged members to strictly uphold the party’s constitution and operational guidelines. He issued a strong caution against corruption, ticket-trading, and manipulation of primaries. He also warned against other “shady practices” often seen in other political parties.
He commended Delta leaders for their commitment to the ADC project. He also encouraged them to collaborate with the national leadership. This collaboration aims to strengthen party structures throughout the state.
The National Vice Chairman (South-South), Mr. Usani Uguru Usani, also spoke. He encouraged members across the Niger Delta region. He urged them not to let past political setbacks diminish their resolve.
