The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has offered a clear explanation. It addressed why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi were absent. They missed the unveiling of the party’s new national secretariat. This event took place on November 17 in Abuja.
The party firmly denied claims that Obi intentionally avoided the ceremony. Speculation suggested his absence was linked to the building. This building previously served as Atiku’s 2023 campaign office.
Several high-profile personalities attended the unveiling. These included ADC National Chairman David Mark. National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola was also present. So was former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. However, both Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar were notably absent. Neither individual issued a formal statement regarding their non-attendance.
During the event, David Mark addressed the gathering. He described the new secretariat as a powerful symbol. It represents the coalition’s broader ambition to transform Nigeria’s governance.
Mark stated, “It is a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation.” He added, “This ADC coalition is a historic child of necessity. It is inspired by people’s desire for good governance, greater accountability, and a stronger democracy.”
ADC Clarifies Absences and Debunks Rumours
Responding to widespread speculation, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi spoke with Punch. He clarified that Obi’s absence was not due to political disagreements. Abdullahi strongly maintained that the former presidential candidate remains dedicated to the coalition.
Abdullahi explained the reasons for their absence. “The programme was impromptu,” he stated. “Most of the party leaders were not in attendance.” He added, “Obi was out of the country, and Atiku wasn’t available.”
He further assured, “There’s nothing to suggest that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us.”
Abdullahi also refuted rumours connecting the new secretariat to Atiku.
He clarified the situation: “Atiku isn’t the owner of the building. He didn’t donate it to the ADC.” Abdullahi continued, “He leased the building previously, and his rent had expired. The ADC then rented the building.”
Abdullahi emphasized that there is “no rift whatsoever” among the coalition leaders. He added that the alliance has one main focus. That is defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Peter Obi’s Political Future Remains Undecided
Similarly, Yunusa Tanko, former spokesman for the Obi-Datti Campaign, weighed in. He is also the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide. Tanko asserted that Obi is not abandoning the ADC coalition.
“No, Obi is not abandoning the ADC coalition,” Tanko stated. “I don’t know where that speculation is coming from.”
According to Tanko, Obi is meticulously evaluating his options. He will do this before publicly announcing his next political move.
Tanko explained Obi’s caution. “He doesn’t want to be in a place where he will feel trapped,” he said. “So he needs to be extremely careful where he gets his ticket.”
Tanko further noted the significant public interest in Obi. This means Obi must “get it right” before any formal announcement.
“Our hope is that since the presidency is the turn of a southern candidate,” Tanko shared. “The ADC will be looking to give him the ticket.”
Obi had previously indicated he would reveal his decision after the Anambra governorship election. Tanko confirmed that this timeline remains unchanged.
“He will make his intention known at the appropriate time,” Tanko concluded. “He shouldn’t be pressured.”
