The Abia State High Court has again blocked the proposed local government congresses of the Labour Party. These congresses were organised by the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC). They formed part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
This development was announced by the Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party. Its interim National Publicity Secretary, Ife Salako, issued a statement. Salako confirmed that the Abia State High Court, sitting in Isiala Ngwa, granted an interim order on November 26, 2025. The order is filed under Suit No: HIN/47/2025.
Hon. Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti obtained this court order. It stops Barrister Julius Abure and his National Working Committee. The Usman faction describes Abure’s NWC as ‘illegal’. They are now barred from conducting their ‘purported and unlawful’ ward, local government, and state congresses.
Court Order Details and Faction’s Stance
The statement to the public read: “All Labour Party supporters nationwide should note this development. On November 26, 2025, the Abia State High Court in Isiala Ngwa issued an interim order. This order, Suit No: HIN/47/2025, was sought by Hon. (Sir) Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti. It restrains Barrister Julius Abure and his ‘illegal’ National Working Committee. They cannot proceed with their ‘purported and unlawful’ ward, local government, and state congresses.”
The Labour Party then urged its numerous members across Nigeria. They must “completely disregard” the congresses promoted by Julius Abure and his associates.
The statement clarified that these “illegal exercises” have been declared “null and void” by a competent court. As a “law-abiding political party”, members are encouraged to “respect and comply with the court’s directive.”
The faction added, “The Labour Party congresses will commence soon. Members will be duly informed once details are finalised.”
Appeal to IGP and INEC
The Usman faction also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The IGP is listed as the 6th Defendant/Respondent in the suit. They urged him to enforce the court order.
They asked the IGP to arrest and prosecute anyone. This includes those organising or participating in any “purported” Labour Party congresses. This applies to dates like December 2nd, 4th, or 6th, or any other date. Such activities are only valid if authorised by the legitimate leadership, led by Senator Usman.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also received a caution. INEC is the 7th Defendant/Respondent in this case.
The party urged INEC to distance itself from these “illegalities”. They claimed these acts are orchestrated by individuals aiming to “tarnish the hard-earned reputation” of the Commission.
Furthermore, the faction stated its intention to formally notify INEC. This will happen once its timetable for “authentic” congresses and conventions is released. This action aligns with the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.
