APC Suspends Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State has suspended Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho, who represents the Kogi East Senatorial District, after accusing him of engaging in actions contrary to party interests.
The decision emerged from a resolution passed by the APC Executive Committee in Odu Ward 2, Dekina Local Government Area, during a meeting held on May 26, 2026.
The ward’s leadership, including Chairman Shaibu Mohammed and Secretary Kabiru Mohammed, issued a suspension letter stating that Echocho had been involved in prolonged anti‑party behaviour.
According to the ward executives, his conduct was aimed at advancing a personal third‑term agenda rather than supporting the party’s welfare at the ward and district levels.
They said the suspension became necessary because of his continued disregard for party unity and discipline, which had caused concern among members in the ward and across the senatorial district.
However, the Kogi East Progressive Forum denounced the suspension, describing it as illegal, baseless and politically motivated.
The forum’s spokesperson, Comrade Musa Ibrahim, claimed the move was a desperate attempt by political rivals to damage the senator’s reputation.
The group insisted that the allegations linking Echocho to anti‑party activities and a planned defection were false and misleading.
It argued that no ward executive possesses the constitutional authority to suspend a sitting senator without following the proper party procedures and involving the appropriate party organs.
The forum maintained that the suspension did not follow due process and should not be taken seriously by party members or the public.
It affirmed that Echocho remains a loyal APC member and has not taken any step that could justify the ward’s action.
The suspension comes weeks after Echocho criticised the conduct of the APC primary election in Kogi East, alleging that it fell short of party guidelines and electoral laws.
Following the primary, he petitioned the National Working Committee of the APC over the outcome, which was won by Joseph Erico Ameh.
His petition has heightened tensions within the party in Kogi East, where the senatorial primary result continues to generate political friction.
