Kano NDC Governorship Ticket: Kwankwaso Considers Gwarzo or Gawuna for 2027 Election
Political tension is building in Kano State as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) await the official announcement of the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The expected declaration will come from former Kano State governor and Kwankwasiyya leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
According to sources within the movement, extensive consultations and closed‑door meetings have taken place in recent days to settle on a candidate.
Credible insiders say former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo has emerged as the preferred consensus choice after marathon discussions with key stakeholders.
“The discussions were intense and far‑reaching, but at the end of the day, the movement agreed on Gwarzo as the consensus candidate,” one source noted.
The movement also considered former APC governorship aspirant Nasiru Gawuna, who joined the Kwankwasiyya camp following Yusuf’s defection.
Efforts were made to accommodate Gawuna by offering him either the deputy governorship slot or the Kano Central senatorial ticket, but he reportedly declined both offers.
Insiders claim Gawuna insisted his decision to join the movement was based on principle, not personal political gain.
Some stakeholders argued that zoning the governorship ticket to Kano Central would give the opposition a strategic electoral edge, citing Gawuna’s strong grassroots influence in the district.
“Gawuna has strong grassroots appeal in Kano Central, which remains the electoral heartbeat of the state. A candidate from that axis would have given the party a strategic advantage,” a source said.
Supporters of Gwarzo, however, emphasized his loyalty, sacrifices, and commitment to the Kwankwasiyya ideology as reasons he is the best fit for the ticket.
Political consultations and lobbying have intensified across factions as party members await the final decision.
Political commentator Ahmed Gogel urged the movement not to overlook Gawuna’s political strength, stating that defeating Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will require serious consideration of all formidable candidates.
“Politics is about numbers and acceptability. Gawuna remains one of the most formidable candidates in Kano,” Gogel added.
