ADC Chairman David Mark Says Atiku’s 2027 Candidacy Proves Nigerian Democracy Still Works
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, announced that the emergence of former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election demonstrates that democracy can still work in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja during the official collation and declaration of the primary election results, Mark emphasized that the exercise was not merely about selecting a candidate but also about showing that political contests can be held without descending into chaos.
“Today is not just about announcing a presidential candidate,” he said. “It is also about proving a point to Nigeria and to Nigerians — that democracy can still function, that political competition does not have to become political warfare, and that a party can organize itself around principles rather than personalities.”
Mark thanked ADC members for their steadfastness, patience, sacrifices, understanding, and faith, especially in the face of what he described as daunting challenges. He noted that many had doubted the party, predicted confusion, division, or even collapse.
The ADC chairman also commended fellow aspirants Amaechi and Hayatu‑Deen for participating in the primary, highlighting that the ADC was the only political party to field three strong aspirants for its presidential ticket.
“This alone makes the ADC unique in its deep commitment to democracy and democratic practices,” Mark added. He expressed confidence that the peaceful primary process signals a bright future for the nation despite current anxieties.
