Kasper Schmeichel Retires at 39 Due to Shoulder Injury
Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39 after struggling to overcome a severe shoulder injury. The veteran goalkeeper, whose contract with Celtic F.C. was nearing its expiry, had been sidelined since February. Following consultations with surgeons and medical specialists, the former Denmark international decided to end his playing career.
Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2, Schmeichel said, “I believe that now is the right time.” He added that the injury originated during Denmark’s Nations League quarter‑final loss to Portugal in March 2025, when he damaged his shoulder but continued playing because Denmark had already used all substitutes.
The problem worsened later during Celtic’s Europa League defeat against Stuttgart. Schmeichel revealed he explored every possible avenue to continue, even contemplating a rehabilitation programme that could have lasted up to a year. Ultimately, medical advice indicated he could not expect to return to top‑flight football.
Career Highlights
Schmeichel departs the game with 120 caps for the Denmark national team, having represented his country at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. He was a key figure in Denmark’s semi‑final run at Euro 2020.
At club level, his most successful spell came with Leicester City, where he helped the Foxes secure the Premier League title in 2015‑16 and later lifted the FA Cup in 2021. After leaving Leicester, he had spells with OGC Nice and Anderlecht before joining Celtic, where he made 39 appearances this season and collected a second Scottish Premiership winners’ medal during his two‑year stint in Glasgow.
Schmeichel, who began his professional journey with Manchester City F.C., admitted he would have preferred a different farewell.
“I think everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the field, but you don’t always get what you want,” he said. “I’ve had so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I’ve had so many opportunities, so many experiences. What stands out most are the friendships and connections I’ve made. The moments I’ve shared with them – for better or worse.”
