Michael Jordan Leads Emotional Tribute as Pep Guardiola Bids Farewell to Manchester City
A packed Co‑op Live arena buzzed with nearly 19,000 Manchester City supporters as they gave Pep Guardiola a thunderous send‑off after his announcement that he would depart the club following a decade of success.
The highlight of the evening arrived when NBA icon Michael Jordan appeared on the giant screen, delivering a personal message to the departing City boss.
“I just wanted to congratulate you on an unbelievable career,” Jordan said, before adding a light‑hearted nod to Guardiola’s love of golf: “Enjoy your retirement. Good luck with the links and keep them straight. Congratulations.”
Football Royalty Joins the Celebration
The tribute quickly turned into a parade of football legends. Former captain Vincent Kompany made a surprise appearance, embracing Guardiola on stage as chants echoed throughout the arena.
English golfer Tommy Fleetwood also paid his respects, calling Guardiola a friend and praising his remarkable impact.
Veteran manager Neil Warnock lauded Guardiola as the best coach he had ever encountered, stating he could not quite believe the Spaniard was leaving.
City’s Triumphs Honoured On Stage
Earlier in the day, thousands lined the streets for a trophy parade before the festivities moved indoors for the emotional finale.
One of the night’s loudest cheers came when City women’s striker Khadija Shaw announced she had signed a new four‑year contract.
The emotion deepened as Guardiola’s children joined former skipper Fernandinho, former director Txiki Begiristain and goalkeeper Ederson to present the 20 trophies won under his leadership.
Guardiola’s Heartfelt Farewell
Taking the stage with Noel Gallagher of Oasis, Guardiola fought back tears while addressing the crowd.
“First of all, thank you so much for coming tonight to say bye,” he said. “Thank you so much, I don’t have enough gratitude. Always, for the rest of my life, I will have you in my heart.”
The evening also featured emotional goodbyes for departing stars Bernardo Silva and John Stones, while striker Erling Haaland acknowledged the huge challenge City now faces without the man who transformed the club into serial winners.
