Nollywood actress Basira Beere has spoken openly about the trauma she endured during her marriage, detailing how domestic violence impacted her health and led to the loss of multiple pregnancies.
Early Signs of Trouble After the Wedding
She said the problems began just a few days after the wedding. A male acquaintance sent her a congratulatory message, and her friendly reply sparked tension. Her husband reacted angrily, setting a pattern of conflict over minor issues.
Escalation to Physical Abuse
The disagreements soon turned violent. Basira described repeated assaults that even drew the attention of their landlord. She recalled trying to cope, but her parents urged her to be patient and stay in the marriage.
Incidents Over Music and Destroyed Property
Arguments sometimes started over music choices. In one case, she was listening to an Osupa mixtape when her husband demanded she switch to a Pasuma track. After refusing, he smashed her phone and then beat her severely.
Health Consequences and Pregnancy Loss
Following the attack, she experienced stomach pain and bleeding, realizing she had lost a pregnancy. She revealed that she suffered three or four pregnancy losses during the marriage, each linked to the physical abuse she endured.
Decision to Leave
Basira said the repeated violence made her fear for her safety. She began to think about self‑defense if the abuse continued. Ultimately, she walked away, convinced that staying longer could have led to a far worse outcome.
Reflections and Gratitude
She expressed gratitude for leaving when she did, noting that the marriage produced no children. Basira added that she had financed about 70 % of the wedding herself, believing she was supporting her husband.
She warned that enduring abuse without action can escalate to tragic consequences, and she is relieved she escaped before the situation turned deadly.
