A suspect connected to the demise of a nursing student from the College of Nursing in Obowo, Wendy Achumba, has allegedly admitted responsibility in a circulating video that has generated considerable online discussion.
The individual, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was allegedly detained by local youths from Umuadara and Umulogho in the Obowo LGA of Imo State after inquiries into the case.
Community Youth-Led Arrest
Community sources indicate the arrest followed rising suspicions and heightened tension in the locality.
The operation was supposedly directed by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa, who organized the efforts resulting in the suspect’s capture.
Widely Shared Video Confession
In a footage that has spread across social platforms, the suspect reportedly described the events, stating he went to the victim’s lodging together with an acquaintance named Emmanuel.
He recounted: “Around 7 p.m., my friend Emmanuel, who works as a phone‑charging attendant, and I arrived at her residence. Finding the premises empty, we proceeded to her room and requested intimacy, which she declined. As we attempted to force compliance, she scratched my face with her nails. We eventually subdued her and committed rape. I engaged in sexual intercourse with her twice while my companion did so three times; subsequently I struck her with a wooden object and he stabbed her with a blade…”.
The clip provoked indignation online, with numerous Nigerians calling for accountability for the deceased scholar.
Victim Lived Alone at the Time
A local informant noted that the deceased student resided alone during the incident because her roommates were away completing nursing practical training.
The informant elaborated: “She was the sole occupant of the house. The property owner lives in the United States. Three students had been sharing the dwelling, but two departed for their clinical placement, leaving only her on the premises.”
