Kano APC Assembly Member Defects to NDC Ahead of 2027 Elections
Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, who represents Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, has announced his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defection comes as political realignments intensify across the state in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Former Governor and influential political figure Rabiu Kwankwaso welcomed the move, describing it as a significant boost to the NDC’s grassroots structure and overall political strength in Kano.
Kwankwaso expressed confidence that the new members would contribute to the party’s expansion and consolidation, noting that Mai Rigar Fata’s return to the Kwankwasiyya camp is expected to reshape political dynamics in Gwale, a key local government area in the state.
Mai Rigar Fata was first elected to the Kano State House of Assembly in 2023 under the banner of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, which is closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement. He later defected alongside Governor Yusuf to the APC before his latest shift back to the NDC.
Joining him in the move are Hon. Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government Area, and Malam Mahadi Isa Umar.
The defection follows a recent Federal High Court ruling that struck down certain electoral guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The judgement, viewed by many stakeholders as easing restrictions on politicians seeking alternative platforms, prompted the African Democratic Congress spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi to predict a wave of departures from the APC.
Abdullahi had earlier stated that the court’s decision removes a barrier designed to keep politicians within the ruling party, and he anticipates a mass exodus from the APC in the coming days.
