Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has raised concerns about the presence of government-backed infiltrators within the party. According to him, the ruling party has planted moles to disrupt opposition activities, a practice he says has become standard in Nigerian politics.
Adebayo Warns Party Members of Consequences
Speaking on allegations that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has infiltrated the SDP, Adebayo stated that such tactics are not new to Nigeria’s political landscape. “It’s a standard practice for the ruling party, not only President Tinubu. Before then, when there was PDP, right from Obasanjo’s time, they were always attacking the other parties,” he explained.
He warned party members against allowing themselves to be used for financial gain or fleeting fame. “My role is to remind members that anyone can be used by the government, especially by politicians. If you allow yourself to be used for a little money or 15 minutes of fame, the consequences will be generational,” Adebayo cautioned.
Nigeria’s Challenges Demand Serious Politics
Adebayo stressed that Nigeria’s current hardships require mature political engagement, not drama. “Nigeria has no room for drama because we are facing existential challenges. If you have a role to play in politics, play a role that is going to yield the best results,” he said.
He further highlighted the dire economic conditions facing ordinary Nigerians, stating, “A hungry person in the Southwest is an angry person. A person who buys petrol for three times their salary is not going to be happy.” Adebayo urged political actors to prioritise the welfare of citizens over internal party manoeuvres.
