Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared her unconventional perspective on marriage, describing the institution as overrated. During an interview with Naija FM, the movie star questioned whether formal unions truly benefit relationships.
Jegede observed that many couples who dated successfully for years often separate shortly after marriage. She suggested that adding the “marriage tag” introduces new pressures that can undermine relationships.
“I think marriage is overrated,” Jegede stated. “Many people date for 10 to 15 years, get married, then break up within 2 to 3 years. Sometimes you wonder why they didn’t simply remain unmarried.”
The actress believes marriage often breeds intolerance between partners. Instead, she advocates finding someone you love and cohabiting without formal ties.
While open to remarriage if it happens naturally, Jegede emphasized she isn’t actively seeking it. “I’ve learned not to say ‘never,'” she commented, reflecting on her personal experience.
Jegede’s first marriage to Olakunle Abounce Fawole ended in 2019 after less than a year. She previously cited financial struggles and her ex-husband’s inability to manage the relationship respectfully as reasons for their separation.
The actress has also publicly admitted regret about prioritizing love over financial security during that marriage, having served as the primary provider.
