Pep Guardiola has urged Manchester City to prepare for his eventual exit. He stated that no manager stays forever, even with time remaining on his current contract.
Guardiola signed a new deal in November 2024. This contract extends until the close of the 2026-2027 season. The 54-year-old Spanish tactician stressed that long-term club planning should not depend on a single person.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Guardiola addressed the recurring question about his future. “I get asked this every season,” he noted. “Sooner or later, I will quit Manchester City. I have 18 months left, and I am very happy here. The club and I share a strong connection, and whatever unfolds will happen.”
Guardiola clarified there have been no discussions about an early departure. He insisted his comments do not signal an immediate issue. “There are no discussions, end of the subject,” he affirmed. “However, the club must be ready for everything. This includes players, CEOs, everyone, except the owners.”
Since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in 2016, Guardiola has led City through their most successful period. He has delivered six Premier League titles. The club also secured the Champions League crown in the 2022-2023 season. Many other domestic trophies have also been won.
Speculation Around Successors
Guardiola’s comments sparked inevitable speculation about his potential successors. Attention briefly turned to Enzo Maresca, the current Chelsea manager. Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola at City, swiftly dismissed these links.
“It doesn’t affect me,” Maresca stated. “I know it’s just speculation. My sole focus is on Chelsea, and I am proud to be here.”
Current League Form
On the pitch, Manchester City continues its Premier League title chase. They are two points adrift of leaders Arsenal. City will host West Ham United this Saturday. Meanwhile, Chelsea, currently in fourth place, will face Newcastle United at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
