Wilfred Ndidi has been officially appointed as the new captain of the Super Eagles. He steps into this crucial leadership role following the international retirement of William Troost-Ekong.
The Super Eagles made this confirmation on Friday, December 19. The announcement came through the team’s official X account. This marks the end of the Troost-Ekong era and ushers in a new chapter for Nigeria’s national team.
Ndidi’s Vision for Leadership
Wilfred Ndidi has shared his thoughts on the responsibility ahead. He stressed the importance of unity within the squad. Nigeria is preparing for major tournaments, and cohesion will be key.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” Ndidi told Super Eagles media. “With the help of the players, everything will be smooth.”
He continued, “I have spoken with some of the players. I want them to understand our purpose. I also need their full support. The staff as well, we are all in this together.”
Ndidi highlighted the collective focus: “We have discussed the tasks ahead. It is vital for us to remain united and on the same page.”
Leading Towards AFCON 2025
The 28-year-old midfielder will now lead Nigeria into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He was chosen as Troost-Ekong’s successor to guide the team into a new phase of leadership.
Ndidi is no stranger to the armband. He previously captained Nigeria during a 2026 World Cup playoff match last month. This was against DR Congo.
In that game, Troost-Ekong started on the bench. The Super Eagles, coached by Eric Chelle, lost 4-3 on penalties in the CAF qualifying final.
Ndidi has an impressive international career. He has earned 71 caps for Nigeria. His debut came under Sunday Oliseh in a friendly against DR Congo on October 8, 2015. He was just 18 years old at the time.
Club Influence and Future Aspirations
At club level, Ndidi recently concluded an eight-year spell with Leicester City. He joined Turkish club Besiktas in the off-season. His influence is growing there too.
He was named vice-captain of the Turkish side in October. This appointment underscored his growing leadership on and off the pitch.
Captaining Nigeria is now the biggest challenge of his career. The Super Eagles aim to reclaim their position at the summit of African football. They are pushing for consecutive AFCON finals appearances.
Nigeria narrowly missed a fourth continental title in the 2023 tournament. They lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final, after holding a half-time lead.
