A Parisian special criminal court jailed a 30-year-old French woman for ten years. She was involved in a terrorist conspiracy. This conspiracy had ties to the Islamic State group.
Carole Sun, the woman, faced conviction. Judges decided her actions surpassed passive involvement. They saw it as active participation in extremist operations.
Sun was one of many French citizens brought back from Syria. These detention camps held families linked to IS fighters. This happened after the group’s military defeat.
She came back to France in July 2022. This was part of a government initiative. It aimed to prosecute returning citizens.
Links to Major IS Figures Revealed in Court
Prosecutors detailed Sun’s close ties to high-ranking IS members. She resided with people involved in violence. These individuals were linked to the November 2015 Paris attacks.
The court also noted her marriage. Her husband was an IS intelligence operative. He is now jailed in Iraq. Her brother was also linked to the group.
The presiding judge stated, “The court confirms the defendant knowingly joined a violent terrorist structure.”
Path to Radicalization, Expressed Regret, and Ongoing Legal Actions
Sun informed the court of her radicalization via online channels. She admitted to aiding extremist propaganda efforts.
She described camp life as brutal. It was also chaotic. This was especially true for children growing up there.
“Fear and ideology controlled everything there,” she remarked.
French prosecutors noted many similar cases are ongoing. Several women have faced trial since 2017. Authorities continue managing the Syrian conflict’s legal consequences.
