Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has strongly criticized Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. On his ObiOne podcast, Mikel expressed deep concerns about the Nigeria Football Federation’s handling of AFCON 2025 arrangements.
Mikel Questions NFF’s Competence
The football legend questioned how national team coach Eric Chelle could face salary delays. This comes just weeks before the tournament kicks off in Morocco. Mikel called the situation “shameless” and urged immediate resolution.
“I’m not impressed with the preparation,” Mikel stated. “After the World Cup qualifier failures, improvements were expected. Instead, we see repeat failures.”
Salary Dispute Highlights Systemic Issues
Reports indicate coach Eric Chelle is owed three months’ salary. National Sports Commission representative Ibrahim Dikko confirmed payments were being made “as support.” However, Mikel believes this demonstrates systemic mismanagement.
“Serious football nations don’t operate this way,” Mikel emphasized. “These public issues demoralize everyone – coaches, players, and fans. Nigeria deserves better football management.”
AFCON Challenges Ahead
The Super Eagles enter AFCON 2025 in Group C against Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Their opening match against Tanzania is scheduled for December 23 in Fès.
Nigeria’s pre-tournament form includes a 2-1 loss to Egypt in Cairo. This marks their only warm-up game before the continental championship.
