The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly criticized the title of the Nollywood film “A Very Dirty Christmas.” They consider it offensive to Christian beliefs and values.
CAN stated that connecting the sacred Christmas season with the word “dirty” undermines its spiritual importance. This transforms a holy celebration into something vulgar, according to the association.
While acknowledging creative freedom in filmmaking, CAN emphasized responsibility. They urged filmmakers to respect religious sentiments in Nigeria’s diverse society.
The association questioned how regulators approved the title. CAN demanded explanations from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB). They found the approval especially troubling during the Christmas period.
CAN called on industry groups like the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to take a stand. They want clear guidelines on respectful treatment of religious themes in Nigerian films.
The association directly appealed to producer Ini Edo. They requested a title reconsideration, public apology, and careful handling of sacred subjects in future projects.
CAN warned that mocking religious traditions could worsen Nigeria’s existing social divisions. They stressed that such actions harm mutual respect among communities during challenging times.
