Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed that his collaboration with Omah Lay on the hit song “With You” originated from a desire to clear up misconceptions about their relationship.
In a viral video, Davido recounted how he reached out to Omah Lay after seeing a tweet where the younger artist expressed surprise at receiving public recognition from him. Omah Lay had reportedly believed Davido disliked him prior to the interaction.
“Kai Cenat visited Nigeria, and I was driving him to a club when Omah Lay’s song played,” Davido explained. “When Kai asked who the artist was, I praised Omah Lay’s talent publicly.”
The next day, Omah Lay tweeted about Davido’s unexpected shoutout, admitting he’d thought the established star disliked him. This prompted Davido to message him directly saying, “Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never even met.”
Their conversation led to exchanging contact information and creative collaboration. The artists worked on four potential tracks before selecting “With You” as their official release.
Featured on Davido’s fifth studio album “5ive,” the collaboration has since earned a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance at the upcoming 2026 awards.
