FIFA has responded to mounting criticism by announcing a limited release of discounted tickets for every match at the 2026 World Cup. This decision follows intense backlash from supporters’ groups regarding the tournament’s soaring attendance costs.
A new ticket category priced at $60 (approximately £45) will be available across all 104 matches. FIFA stated these specially priced tickets target loyal supporters from nations qualifying for the competition.
A FIFA official involved in the discussions confirmed, “We have listened to feedback, and this new category is the right thing to do.” The decision reportedly received unanimous support.
The move addresses weeks of pressure from fan organizations. They warned the original pricing structure could exclude ordinary supporters. Previous estimates showed England fans facing costs exceeding £5,000 to follow their team through to the final.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer welcomed FIFA’s announcement while urging further action. “As someone who used to save for England tickets, I encourage FIFA to ensure the World Cup remains accessible to genuine supporters,” he stated.
The £45 tickets constitute the tournament’s cheapest category. They’ll represent 10% of each qualified nation’s allocation. The 2026 event will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Football Supporters’ Association chair Tom Greatrex dismissed the initiative. He called it a “hollow gesture” and “cynical attempt to deflect attention while continuing to rip fans off.”
Football Supporters Europe echoed similar concerns. They acknowledged FIFA’s recognition of pricing issues but stated the revisions “do not go far enough.”
FIFA officials addressed pricing concerns during recent meetings in Doha. English Football Association sources confirmed the changes were discussed with FIFA leadership beforehand. They privately view the move as a positive step.
FIFA elaborated on the allocation process: “Entry tier tickets will go specifically to supporters of qualified teams. Participating member associations will manage distribution individually.”
Each association will establish its own eligibility criteria. FIFA has requested these tickets reach loyal fans deeply connected to their national teams. Affordable tickets will constitute 50% of allocations across two price tiers.
