The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a concerted effort to restore internal unity. This initiative aims to reposition the party as Nigeria’s leading political alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
New National Chairman Tanimu Turaki (SAN) recently convened a strategic meeting in Abuja. The gathering united the National Working Committee with influential party elders. These included members from both the Former Governors’ Forum and the Forum of Former Ministers.
Chairman Turaki emphasized the deliberate inclusion of party veterans. He highlighted how PDP’s 16-year governance legacy was shaped by their contributions. “Our former governors delivered landmark projects,” Turaki stated. “Our former ministers achieved phenomenal work during PDP’s tenure.”
The new leadership seeks guidance from experienced members. Turaki explained they want to understand PDP’s past successes. “We need to learn what earned Nigerians’ trust previously,” he said. “What made PDP a household name? We welcome all advice and directives.”
Turaki acknowledged past mistakes within the party. He pledged corrective actions through transparency and internal reforms. “This marks the beginning of a new PDP,” the chairman declared.
Dr. Babangida Aliyu, leading the Former Governors’ Forum, outlined requirements for PDP’s resurgence. He stressed humility and public respect as essential foundations. Aliyu noted current voter dissatisfaction creates political opportunity. “Nigerians have been unhappy since 2015,” he observed. “By 2027, we must provide renewed hope and direction.”
Aliyu called for disciplined unity among members. “Our party will endure beyond our lifetimes,” he affirmed.
Former ministers’ representative Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau praised Turaki’s early leadership. He specifically commended the chairman’s resolve in reclaiming party headquarters. This followed November’s National Elective Convention in Ibadan.
“We defied tear gas and threats during the inauguration,” Shekarau recalled. “Chairman, your actions deserve congratulations.” He assured full ministerial support for the NWC. Shekarau echoed Nigerians’ growing appreciation for PDP’s past governance. This sentiment emerges from current experiences under other administrations.
