Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez admits the sting of past Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) exits remains. The Desert Foxes are now in Morocco. They are determined to reclaim their honour at the upcoming tournament.
The 2019 champions endured disastrous campaigns in 2022 and 2024. They failed to win a single match in both tournaments. Shock defeats, including Mauritania’s historic first AFCON win, led to deep reflection. This ultimately resulted in the dismissal of long-serving coach Djamel Belmadi.
Algeria finds itself in Group E. Their opponents are Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea. The team is under immense pressure. They must prove their past humiliations were isolated incidents, not a new pattern.
Mahrez, who plays for Al Ahli, stressed the squad understands the high stakes. They are fully aware of the challenge ahead.
“We must be realistic, considering our performance in the last two AFCON tournaments,” the 34-year-old winger told CAF Online. “Failure is not an option this time.”
Many observers tip Algeria as strong contenders. However, Mahrez dismissed talk of favoritism. He insisted that reputation alone cannot win matches.
“Some people list us among the title favourites, but that counts for nothing,” he stated. “Morocco must be the favourites. They will play on home soil, supported by massive, passionate crowds.”
Petkovic’s Pragmatic Vision for Algeria
Head coach Vladimir Petkovic took charge after seven years with Switzerland. He has guided the team through a steady recovery. The former Lazio boss boasts 15 wins from 20 matches since his appointment. He also secured qualification for both AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup.
Despite this, Petkovic aims to temper expectations. He prefers to avoid making bold promises.
“Our primary goal is to qualify for the second round,” he told Algerian media. “Then, we will assess our position.” He acknowledged the significant expectations surrounding his team.
“We are the favourites in our group,” he added. “We must embrace this responsibility.”
Algeria is again being considered a potential champion. Still, Petkovic remains wary. He cautions against talk of securing a third continental crown.
“I never promise anything,” the coach reiterated.
Petkovic believes Algeria’s resurgence depends on more than tactics or individual skill. He feels unity will be crucial. It will determine their progress in Morocco.
“I can assure Algerians that this team will wear the national jersey with pride,” he affirmed. “They will play with courage.”
“Unity is paramount,” Petkovic stressed. “The entire nation’s support is essential. If we are divided, success will be hard to achieve.”
