Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has described his return to the national team as both emotional and deeply satisfying. This recall comes as Nigeria intensifies preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco.

Uzoho’s Joyful Return
Uzoho made Eric Chelle’s final 28-man squad for the prestigious tournament. He is one of three goalkeepers selected by the head coach. Chelle’s list also features eight defenders and eight midfielders. Nine forwards were chosen, with five new players earning their first national call-ups.
Francis Uzoho last played for the national team in March 2024. This appearance was during a friendly match against Ghana. Having been away for over a year, the 26-year-old admitted his return reminded him of the strong team bond within the squad.
“I truly missed the boys,” Uzoho stated. “I missed the camp’s vibrant atmosphere. We have been together for a long time.” He added, “The most important thing I missed was being around them. We united through different challenges. We always check up on each other. I am closer to some colleagues, but I reach out to everyone.”
The former Golden Eaglets star felt both relief and happiness upon receiving the invitation. Representing Nigeria remains the highest honour of his career, he affirmed.
“I was filled with an unexpressible joy,” Uzoho shared. “It was a relief to know I was returning to the boys. I wanted to experience that familiar feeling again. Representing Nigeria is truly paramount.” He further stated, “Anyone called to the national team is ready. If you are not prepared, you won’t be invited.” Uzoho believes the technical crew knows its job. “When they invite a player, they believe he is ready. I am ready. If the country needs me, I will be prepared.”
Uzoho also dispelled any talks of tension among the goalkeepers. He affirmed his strong bond with fellow shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali. Their relationship, he insisted, is built on trust and mutual support.
“I am close to everyone,” he confirmed. “Stanley is my brother. When he joined, we were all supportive. We helped each other grow. He is a good person. We share a very close relationship. People outside may not see it, but personally, we get along well.”
Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Campaign
Nigeria will compete in Group C at the upcoming tournament. Their opponents are Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Super Eagles will kick off their campaign on December 23 against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars. Next, they face Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles on December 27. Their final group stage match is against Uganda’s Cranes on December 30.
Nigeria finished as runners-up at the last AFCON, losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. Now, the team heads to Morocco with a clear objective. They aim to secure their fourth continental title. Nigeria previously lifted the coveted trophy in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
