Enugu Highway Kidnapping: Survivor Details Horrifying Four-Day Ordeal

A man recently survived a four-day kidnapping ordeal. This occurred on the Ugwogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka Road in Enugu State. He shared a harrowing account. It reveals the operations of criminal gangs on this busy highway.

Peter, the victim, shared his story via a Facebook post. Senator Chijinkem Ugwuanyi shared it. Peter was abducted on November 29, 2025. The incident happened around 5 PM. It was near the final police checkpoint before Ugwogo Roundabout. He was traveling from Nsukka to Enugu at the time.

Peter recounted the sudden onset of the attack. Gunmen fired from both sides of the road. This caused vehicles to collide. He tried to escape into the bush. However, he was caught. This happened near a Scripture Union building. It was close to Camp of Grace.

“I heard a loud ‘heey!’ he remembered. A gun was aimed at me. I was told to lie down. I accepted my fate then.”

Peter then joined other captives. They endured a “four-day nomadic lifestyle.” This involved trekking through bushes and farmlands. The gang comprised eleven armed men. They carried AK-47 rifles and other weapons.

Peter also described the gang’s leader. He stated: “He was a man of medium build. His voice commanded authority. He managed all operations. He spoke English, Pidgin, Fulfulde, and Igbo fluently.”

The kidnappers moved constantly. This avoided detection by security forces. They fed their captives just once daily. Victims were also forced to carry the gang’s supplies.

During his captivity, Peter witnessed further attacks. The gang conducted at least two more on the same road. This brought in additional victims.

Peter urged motorists to avoid the route in late afternoons and evenings. He suggested 9 AM to 1 PM seemed safer. He also advised victim families to stay calm during ransom talks.

After his release, Peter thanked God and his supporters. His experience highlights rising insecurity. This has renewed public concern for Enugu highways.
