FC Porto is reportedly trying to delay the release of Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi. He is needed for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Porto should release the defender after their league match next Monday. That game is against Estrela. Yet, reports suggest the club now wants to keep him longer.
According to One Football, Porto wants the 26-year-old for a Portuguese Cup game. This crucial clash against Famalicão is on December 18. They wish him to play before joining the Nigerian national team camp.
This request appears to contradict FIFA’s directive. The global body requires clubs to release players for AFCON by Monday, December 15.
Despite FIFA’s clear position, Porto is exploring options. They aim to retain the Nigerian international until after the important Cup tie.
Sanusi has battled injuries in recent months. Still, he remains Nigeria’s first-choice left-back. He is expected to play a vital role in the team’s AFCON campaign.
More updates are expected soon. Both the club and the Nigerian national team are navigating this release deadline before the tournament.
Lookman’s Final Game Before Super Eagles Call-Up
Meanwhile, Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman will also join the Super Eagles soon. He will make his final appearance of the year for Atalanta this Saturday. Afterwards, he heads to link up with the national team.
Lookman, 27, is set to feature in Atalanta’s festive charity fixture. This game is against Cagliari at the New Balance Arena.
This annual Christmas match is now in its fifteenth year. Club president Antonio Percassi introduced it. It has grown into one of the Bergamo side’s most recognisable traditions.
Atalanta confirmed the match details on their official website. The club announced their final home fixture before the holidays. They will face Cagliari on Saturday, December 13, with kick-off at 20:45 CET. As per tradition, shirts worn by the team for the Christmas Match will be auctioned. All proceeds will go to charity.
Once the full-time whistle blows, Lookman is expected to depart for the Super Eagles’ camp on Sunday. Nigeria will then take on Egypt in a friendly on December 16. This match is part of their preparations for the tournament in Morocco.
Lookman heads into AFCON in fine form. He had a difficult start to the campaign. But he has rediscovered his spark in recent weeks. He played a major role in Atalanta’s impressive 2-1 win over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.
