Portuguese football powerhouse FC Porto is reportedly attempting to postpone the release of Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi. This move comes ahead of the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Initial reports suggested the club would release the defender after their Portuguese league fixture against Estrela next Monday. However, Porto is now pressing to retain Sanusi for a longer period.
According to One Football, “the Dragons” desire the 26-year-old to play in their Portuguese Cup match. This crucial game against Famalicão is scheduled for December 18. They want him to join the Nigerian camp only after this fixture.
This request, however, seems to clash with FIFA’s clear directives. FIFA mandates clubs to release players for AFCON by Monday, December 15.
Despite the global football body’s stance, Porto is reportedly seeking methods to keep the Nigerian international. They aim to retain him until after the vital Cup encounter.
Sanusi has recently struggled with injuries. Nevertheless, he remains Nigeria’s primary choice for left-back. He is expected to be a crucial player in the Super Eagles’ AFCON bid.
Further updates are anticipated as both club and country work through the release deadline. The tournament looms large.
Ademola Lookman’s Final Club Game Before AFCON Call-Up
In related news, Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman is set for his last club appearance of the year. He will play for Atalanta on Saturday before joining the Super Eagles for AFCON 2025.
The 27-year-old Ademola Lookman is scheduled to participate in Atalanta’s festive charity match. This game is against Cagliari and will take place at the New Balance Arena.
This annual Christmas fixture is now in its fifteenth year. Club president Antonio Percassi initiated it. It has become one of the Bergamo team’s most recognized traditions.
Atalanta confirmed these match details via a statement on their official website. They announced: ‘The final home fixture before the holidays will see Atalanta face Cagliari on Saturday, December 13. Kick-off is at 20:45 CET. As per tradition, the team’s Christmas Match shirts will be auctioned off. All proceeds will go to charity.’
Immediately after the final whistle, Lookman is expected to leave for the Super Eagles’ camp on Sunday. Nigeria will then play a friendly against Egypt on December 16. This match is part of their preparations for the tournament in Morocco.
Lookman approaches AFCON in excellent form. He had a challenging start to the season. However, he has rediscovered his prowess in recent weeks. He recently played a significant part in Atalanta’s superb 2-1 Champions League victory over Chelsea.
