Nigerian lawmakers have condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive. This order mandates the withdrawal of police orderlies from Very Important Personalities (VIPs).
Speaking during a plenary session, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) shared his experience. He revealed his only police orderly was withdrawn early on Wednesday. However, he noted that other categories of VIPs still enjoy police protection.
Senator Ningi strongly criticized this uneven enforcement. He insisted that the policy must apply uniformly. This ensures fairness and equity across the board.
“It should be done across the board,” Ningi stated. He called for consistency from the Presidency down to ministers. “After they withdrew my only orderly, I still see convoys of ministers with heavy security.”
Ningi highlighted further disparities. He observed that many business concerns, including Chinese companies, still have orderlies. He also cited children of political office holders and even singers enjoying police protection.
The Senator affirmed his ability to protect himself. Yet, he argued it was unjust to single out senators. He urged the Senate President to act. He called for the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate this selective enforcement.
“The National Assembly should not be used as a scapegoat,” he added firmly.
In response, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who presided over the session, provided an update. He confirmed that the Senate leadership had thoroughly discussed the matter. They are now engaging the Presidency to seek an exemption for lawmakers.
Jibrin reassured affected senators. Efforts are actively underway to restore their police orderlies. He emphasized that such protection aligns with international practice for legislators.
“We have taken this issue seriously,” Jibrin affirmed. “We have a listening President. I am sure he will save us from that order. It was given in good faith.”
This intervention by the Senate comes amidst a growing national debate. The discussion centers on balancing VIP protection. It also addresses the critical need to enhance police presence in communities nationwide.
