A Lagos street panhandler, known as the “Lekki street boy,” recently stirred social media discussions. He asserts that he spends over ₦200,000 daily. This sum allows him to meet prominent figures and affluent individuals. His goal is to solicit funds from them.
This young man frequents luxury spots in Lekki. He has gained notoriety for this practice. He claims that begging in upscale districts is not for the underprivileged. It demands considerable financial outlay to encounter influential people.
High Costs for Street Solicitation
In a recent interview, he detailed his daily expenditures. He spends substantial amounts to position himself near celebrities.
He stated, “Yesterday alone, I spent ₦250,000. I wanted to ask someone for money inside a club. I bought one shot of Azul for ₦70,000. I purchased three of them. Sometimes, I spend up to ₦400,000 just to gain access to beg.”
He added, “I spend this much to meet famous personalities. I spend people’s salaries simply to encounter celebrities and beg. Do you think I am doing poor man’s begging?”
His declarations astonished many Nigerians. They expressed skepticism that a panhandler could afford such expenses.
Some social media users criticized his extravagant lifestyle. Others contended it reflects the intense pressure to engage with celebrities in Lagos nightlife.
This ongoing debate continues to spark various responses. Many question his funding sources. They also ponder if his method of soliciting undermines the very concept of begging.
