Sheffield Wednesday have formally entered administration, ending months of financial turmoil under owner Dejphon Chansiri. This move triggers an automatic 12-point deduction under English Football League regulations.
The Championship club confirmed on Friday that joint administrators from Begbies Traynor have taken charge. Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield and Paul Stanley will oversee both Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited and the company owning Hillsborough Stadium.
Administration Takes Immediate Effect
Kris Wigfield stated administrators assumed control immediately. Their priority is protecting creditors while ensuring club operations continue. They aim to find a new owner swiftly.
Wigfield revealed the club ran at major losses for years. Chansiri covered many deficits personally before financial pressures mounted. Administration enables marketing the club and stadium together as a package.
Fan Discontent Deepens Crisis
Growing fan frustration led to protests and boycotts this season. Hillsborough attendance dropped by approximately 35% year-on-year. This decline worsened the club’s financial position.
Paul Stanley assured supporters all fixtures will continue. Saturday’s home match against Oxford United remains scheduled. He called Wednesday a historic club with passionate support.
Stanley urged more fans to attend matches. Increased attendance could help cover operational costs. This support could also facilitate a viable sale of the club.
