Nigerian singer Emeka Akumefule, famously known as Blaqbonez, encountered hostility during a recent performance in Abuja. The incident has drawn widespread public condemnation.
The unfortunate event occurred on December 7. It took place at the Delphino Picnic, located behind the Abuja Velodrome. Blaqbonez was performing alongside fellow artists Runtown and Duncan Mighty. Disruptions began during his rendition of ‘ACL’. This song is a track from his October album, ‘No Excuses’.
Reports suggest some attendees reacted with anger. This hostile reception was possibly linked to Blaqbonez’s past conflict with his colleague, Odumodublvck. His recent statements shared online may have also contributed to the tension. Despite the challenging atmosphere, Blaqbonez remained composed throughout the incident.
He later addressed the situation on his Twitter page. In a defiant post, Blaqbonez wrote, “thought they could stop me from doing acl, i gave them 3 times 😂”. His composure amidst the disruption was noted by many.
Public Outcry and Fan Reactions
The incident quickly sparked widespread reactions across social media. Many fans expressed their shock and disappointment. The general sentiment condemned the unprovoked attack on the artist.
Several users voiced their opinions. Nedafor commented, “No one deserves to be treated like that on stage, even if you don’t like their music.” Makyosu, another user, stressed the importance of artist respect. “Throwing objects is unacceptable,” Makyosu added. Tundeoguns acknowledged potential performance mismatches. However, he firmly stated, “violence is never the answer.”
Sadebayo highlighted artists’ rights. She asserted, “Blaqbonez has the right to perform without fear of attacks from the audience.” Manueleze criticized the audience’s behaviour. This user called it “a lack of maturity and respect for entertainers.” Ngozikachi clarified that disliking a song is acceptable. Yet, “disrupting a show and throwing things is crossing the line,” Ngozikachi concluded. Ifeanyiukwu urged fan support. He reminded that “Artistes put in hard work to perform; fans should support, not attack.”
The overwhelming consensus among the public is that such actions are unwarranted and disrespectful to performers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges artists sometimes face during live events.
