Abuja, Nigeria – Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has declared his unwavering commitment to preventing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from collapsing. He vowed to employ all necessary measures to ensure the party’s survival.
Wike stated that he, alongside other founding members, would not allow individuals who joined the party from other political groups to dismantle the PDP.
Wike Condemns ‘Illegal Convention’ and Disregard for Court Orders
The Minister accused a rival faction within the party of violating court judgments. He described their actions, including a recent convention, as “illegal.” Wike stressed that the PDP must uphold judicial processes if it hopes to regain public trust and confidence.
“You sought an ex-parte order from a State High Court to compel a convention, overriding existing Federal High Court judgments,” Wike recounted. “How can you disregard two final judgments and still claim leadership?”
He further questioned the faction’s motives. “You held the convention without obeying court orders. Now, you’re seeking recognition from a Federal High Court. If INEC already recognizes you, what is the actual purpose of this court action?”
Wike criticized the opposing faction for relying on propaganda. He issued a stern warning against allowing selfish interests to destroy the political platform. The PDP, he noted, has been in existence since 1998.
“We must not let our party die,” Wike asserted. “Leadership demands commitment and honesty, not mere propaganda. If we fail to respect our own laws, how can we expect respect from Nigerians?”
The FCT Minister urged all party faithful to support legitimate leadership. He called for unity to rebuild the PDP in line with core democratic principles and judicial integrity.
Calls for Caretaker Committee Emerge from NEC Meeting
In a related development, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP has received calls to constitute a Caretaker Committee. This committee would guide the party forward as the tenure of the current National Working Committee approaches its expiration.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, the factional Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, made this appeal. He addressed the party’s 104th NEC meeting on Sunday.
The BoT also highlighted ongoing efforts to establish caretaker leadership in various states and zones. This includes areas like Anambra and the South-East, where congresses could not be held earlier. These efforts, the BoT explained, are vital to prevent leadership gaps and enhance overall party organization.
