Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has strongly condemned the violent assault on his compatriot, Terem Moffi. The OGC Nice striker was attacked by angry fans following the club’s recent defeat. Simon expressed deep concern for Moffi’s well-being.
French media reported chaotic scenes during the attack. Supporters reportedly punched, kicked, and spat on Moffi and another player. Some blows were allegedly aimed at their genitals. Moffi, who played the entire match against his former team, also faced racist abuse.
Reports indicate the other player, Boga, was targeted over ticket-related issues. These were reportedly linked to acquaintances from Marseille. Meanwhile, some ultras accused Moffi of “smiling” with former Lorient president Loïc Féry. This happened after the final whistle.
Moffi was still recovering from fitness problems at the time. His teammates helped him escape the violent situation. Both players have since filed formal complaints with the police.
Moses Simon contacted Moffi soon after the incident. He told RMC Sport that his Super Eagles colleague is still grappling with the trauma.
Simon recounted their conversation. “I talked with him,” Simon said. “He is touched, and he still feels some pain.” He stressed the gravity of the situation. “When something like that happens, it’s not good. It’s especially bad for a big Ligue 1 club.” Simon added, “Such an incident in a top-five European championship is truly a mess. I sincerely hope the club and the Federation will take action.”
Medical tests conducted the next day confirmed Moffi sustained “physical and psychological impact.” He was placed on sick leave until Sunday. The other player, Boga, received a medical certificate granting him at least five days of rest.
OGC Nice released a strong statement condemning the attack. They called the actions “unacceptable” and pledged full support to their players. The French players’ union, UNFP, also voiced outrage. They declared, “The physical and psychological integrity of those who make football is non-negotiable.”
