Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar served as a Nigerian Army officer. He became the 20th Sultan of Sokoto in 2006. This made him a key spiritual figure for Nigerian Muslims.
Early Life and Academic Journey
Abubakar was born in Sokoto on August 24, 1956. He is the son of the late Sultan Siddiq Abubakar Illo.
He began his studies at Sultan’s Ward Primary School. Later, he attended Barewa College in Zaria. This school is among Nigeria’s most respected institutions.
He then joined the Nigerian Defense Academy. This step prepared him for a notable military career.
A Prominent Military Service
Muhammadu Abubakar dedicated over 30 years to the Nigerian Army. He achieved the rank of Brigadier General.
His military service included leadership roles. He commanded peacekeeping forces in Chad. He also led the 231 Tank Battalion in Sierra Leone during ECOMOG operations.
From 2003 to 2006, he served as Nigeria’s Defense Attaché to Pakistan.
Ascension to the Sultanate
After his elder brother’s death, Abubakar retired from the military. He then took on the mantle of Sultan of Sokoto. His official enthronement was on November 2, 2006.
Leadership in Islamic Matters
As Sultan, Abubakar guides the Qadiriyya Sufi order. He also acts as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
