Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero has condemned the growing practice of failed election candidates manipulating court processes to overturn legitimate poll results. Representing Kebbi Central, Aliero issued this warning during the opening ceremony of a joint retreat for Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters in Lagos.
The lawmaker described the trend as a dangerous abuse of Nigeria’s democratic system. He revealed disturbing instances where election losers allegedly bribed their way to victory through judicial channels after failing at the ballot box.
“This pattern of using bribery to overturn election outcomes is completely unacceptable,” Aliero stated. He emphasized that such practices erode public confidence in both electoral and judicial institutions.
According to the senator, lawmakers have spent over eighteen months conducting public hearings. They are now working to reform Nigeria’s electoral framework. The focus remains on eliminating inconsistencies within the Electoral Act 2022.
“We’re amending all problematic sections to remove ambiguities and discrepancies,” Aliero declared. “Multiple loopholes have been identified. We’re committed to blocking them to ensure truly free and credible elections.”
