Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has pointed to Nigeria’s colonial past as the origin of its deep-seated divisions. According to him, the British colonial masters bequeathed the nation with two enduring “evils”: tribalism and religious bigotry.
George made these remarks on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television. He was commenting on the current state of the nation. The elder statesman expressed deep concern that these British-instigated divisions continue to shape nearly every national challenge Nigeria faces today.
The Colonial Legacy: Tribalism and Religious Bigotry
Highlighting his central argument, George stated, “When the British left here, they left two evils in this country. The first is tribalism, and the second is religious bigotry.”
He further questioned the logic behind such divisions. “The day you were born? Did you ask the Almighty God where you want to be? To be a Yoruba man, an Hausa man, or a Fulani man?” he queried. George believes these “crazy things” were deliberately left behind. He notes that from then till now, every national issue seems to revolve around them.
He questioned the relevance of these divisions to the welfare of citizens. “What has it got to do with putting a smile on the faces of people?” he asked, emphasizing the need to focus on tangible solutions.
A Call for Government Action Amidst Hardship
George also issued a direct appeal to the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government. He urged them to take decisive action, particularly concerning the widespread hunger and anger in the country. He stressed the importance of providing meaningful engagement opportunities for Nigerians.
“I want to appeal to the APC government that while we are facing this terrible hunger in the land, and there is anger in the land, they should do something especially for the people to engage themselves meaningfully,” George implored. He highlighted the approaching election year as a critical factor. Compounding these issues, he warned, could create a “time bomb” for the nation.
