The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong. This follows the defender’s recent confirmation of his retirement from international football.
In a statement, the NFF reflected on Troost-Ekong’s decade at the core of Nigeria’s defence. They described him as a model professional. He led the national team with dignity and a profound sense of responsibility since his debut in 2015.
A Legacy of Leadership and Dedication
The NFF praised Troost-Ekong’s “dedicated, selfless, and humble” approach to leadership. They noted he gave his all for the national jersey. He played “with passion, pride, purpose, and a commendable sense of duty.” The federation added that he was a popular figure within the squad, even before his captaincy.
Troost-Ekong was a key player across three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals. He secured silver and bronze medals for Nigeria. His influential role was evident in the 2019, 2021, and 2023 tournaments.
A major highlight of his international career came in Côte d’Ivoire in 2023. He helped guide the Super Eagles to the final. He was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
His international journey also took him to football’s biggest stage, the FIFA World Cup. He famously scored crucial goals for Nigeria in major competitions. With 83 caps across five major tournaments, the NFF declared he leaves as “a fulfilled man.” He has certainly set a high standard for the next generation of players.

The NFF’s statement concluded with well wishes. “As he retires from the international game, the Nigeria Football Federation wishes William Troost-Ekong the very best in his future endeavours,” it read. The federation also pledged support. “We will do whatever we can, within our capacity, to help him accomplish his future goals and objectives within the round-leather game.”
