A rural community in Sokoto State faces a grave ultimatum. Residents of Bakale village must pay a N20 million levy. This payment is demanded by an armed group. It seeks to prevent future attacks. The village is located in Kilgori district, Yabo Local Government Area.
Armed Group Leader Issues New Demand
An audio recording reveals the gang leader’s instructions. He told the village head to gather residents. The message conveyed the group’s new demand.
The leader questioned, “Did you meet them? Did they agree to my command?”
The traditional ruler confirmed discussions with villagers. The bandit then ordered another meeting. He insisted the community pay N20 million. This payment would supposedly prevent violence.
Ultimatum: Pay or Face Violence
The armed group’s leader stated the levy guarantees peace. It is presented as a way to avoid conflict.
He declared, “We prefer not to attack you. This levy is our solution. Pay it, and you will live in peace. No other group will harm your community. Your people will not be abducted. Fail to pay, however, and we will attack. We will kill residents and abduct others. This is our final word.”
Non-compliance guarantees attacks. It also guarantees killings and abductions.
Multiple Villages Across Districts Affected
An anonymous community leader spoke to reporters. He confirmed similar demands. Several nearby settlements received these threats. This has happened in recent months.
The affected areas span Kilgori and Torankawa districts. These include Bazar, Alkalije, Gari, Bakale, Dagel, Adarawa, Kwaidaza, Kilgori Runji, Tudu, Tile, Kibiyare, and Barmadu. Other villages are also impacted.
Varying Levies Imposed on Villages
Villages are billed individually, the source stated. Charges vary based on size and population.
The armed groups demand fees. These levies range from N3 million to N20 million.
