Prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has launched a reconciliation initiative across Nigeria’s North Central region. The former presidential candidate aims to strengthen party cohesion and rebuild the PDP’s diminishing political influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As part of strategic consultations, Olawepo-Hashim recently met with former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-Sports Minister Damishi Sango. These discussions represent a coordinated effort to mend internal divisions and reposition the PDP as Nigeria’s leading opposition force.
Following his meeting with Saraki, Olawepo-Hashim confirmed both leaders prioritized national stability over personal interests. “We’ve committed to collaborate for Nigeria’s greater good,” he stated. “Our focus is rebuilding the PDP across the North Central zone and nationwide.”
This unity drive emerges amid significant PDP defections across multiple states. Many departing members cite leadership crises, internal conflicts, and the party’s weakening national presence as primary reasons for leaving.
Political observers view Olawepo-Hashim’s engagements as evidence of his growing role as a consensus builder. The North Central zone holds particular significance, having been regarded as the PDP’s moral compass since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Olawepo-Hashim’s heightened visibility is also linked to 2027 election preparations. Many PDP members consider him uniquely positioned to unite disenchanted factions around a shared political agenda.
