American missionary Mike Arnold has penned a forceful open letter. He urged the Nigerian Senate to reject Reno Omokri’s ambassadorial nomination. Omokri is a well-known social media figure and former presidential aide.
President Bola Tinubu recently proposed Omokri as a non-career ambassador. This move has ignited broad discussion both in Nigeria and globally.
Warning of National Risk
Arnold’s letter circulated widely on Monday. He stated Omokri is unfit for diplomatic service. Arnold claims over a decade of experience in Nigeria.
“This man poses a danger to your nation,” Arnold affirmed.
Allegations: Personal and Political Conduct
The missionary listed multiple accusations against Omokri, including:
- He allegedly missed his father’s funeral.
- He reportedly abandoned his son with autism in California.
- He faces claims of shielding a brother. The brother was allegedly involved in a church rape case involving a 15-year-old.
- Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused him of sexual harassment. This occurred during a State House event.
Arnold also highlighted Omokri’s shifting political stances.
The letter noted, “He labeled Tinubu a ‘drug baron.’ Then he called him ‘Christlike’ after receiving payment.” It added, “He claimed ‘Christian genocide’ under Buhari. Later, he dismissed it as a falsehood under Tinubu.”
A “Pathological Liar and Opportunistic Figure”
Arnold described Omokri as a “pathological” liar. He warned that Omokri would change loyalties for a better offer.
The letter asserted, “A foreign government or lobby might offer more money. Then Reno will betray Nigeria.” It concluded, “He would sell out Nigeria as he did his father, son, wife, allies, faith, and stated principles.”
Concern Over International Reputation
Arnold contended that confirming Omokri would worsen negative global views of Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s most damaging global image is the ‘slick scammer’,” he wrote. “Omokri’s nomination reinforces this stereotype. It harms the nation’s image corrosively.”
Arnold predicted Omokri would “embarrass” Nigeria internationally within six months if confirmed.
