Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has declared a ban on masquerade parades. He warned that participants in such activities on state streets would face arrest and prosecution.
Ensuring Public Order and Safety
Governor Eno, acting as the state’s Chief Security Officer, highlighted widespread disruptions. He noted these issues were caused by masquerades in various local government areas. Consequently, he has instructed the Commissioner of Police and other security forces to strictly enforce this prohibition. The Governor emphasized, “We must ensure public peace. These public displays are now forbidden. This ban is final.”
Public Response to the Ban
The directive has generated diverse reactions across social media platforms. One user, @TobouJ67815, questioned the policy’s consistency. They asked about similar enforcement for other groups. Another, @BASILAZU, criticized Governor Eno’s priorities. This user suggested he focus on governance rather than cultural practices. @mrTonySoul argued that masquerades are vital to Akwa Ibom’s cultural festivities. They believe these traditions should not be abolished. Conversely, @yink expressed agreement. This user proposed a similar ban in Lagos due to perceived public nuisance.
