Former Minister of Works and Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has commented on the ongoing efforts by opposition parties to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fashola noted that those who opposed the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are now attempting to create their own coalition, but are finding the process challenging. He stated, “Those who stood in opposition against our emergence are now trying to form a coalition, and they are seeing how difficult it is to form a merger that produced APC.”
He emphasized that the APC’s formation remains the only successful merger in Nigeria’s political history, saying, “History will tell you that that is the only merger that has occurred in Nigeria’s political history. They said it can’t happen but it happened. The opposition can’t do their own.”
Fashola also mentioned that while the official campaign period has not yet begun, members of the ruling party are already preparing for the next election. He clarified, “I know that people are already warming up but the campaign has not started yet. The electoral law stipulates when the campaign should start. Our party is organizing because we are progressives.”
He further explained the party’s guiding principle, stating, “If they ask you why we said we are progressive, it’s because we are determined to improve the human condition.”
