Barcelona’s rising star, Lamine Yamal, has explained his decision to represent Spain over Morocco. A key factor in his choice was the aspiration to win the FIFA World Cup.
Born in Rocafonda, Yamal has a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother. This heritage made him eligible to play for three different nations.
Why Yamal Chose Spain Over Morocco
Morocco’s remarkable 2022 World Cup semi-final run briefly complicated his decision. However, Yamal stated that the allure of European football ultimately influenced him. He desired to compete on the continent’s grandest stage.
Yamal shared his thoughts, “Initially, I did consider playing for Morocco. Especially since they had just reached the World Cup semi-finals.”
He added, “Yet, when it came down to it, I had no doubts. I hold immense love and respect for Morocco, but my desire was always to play in the EURO and within European football.”
He further explained, “I believe European football enjoys wider viewership. It also feels closer to the elite international level.”
Reflecting on his choice, he said, “Alhamdulillah, I achieved that. This path also brings me closer to the World Cup, with opportunities to win it.” Yamal concluded by affirming his dual identity: “I will always cherish Morocco; it is my country. But I grew up in Spain, and I feel it is my country too.”
Yamal’s decision has already proven fruitful. The young talent has quickly become one of Spain’s most promising players.
His Most Memorable Goal
Since joining Barcelona’s first team under Xavi, Yamal has scored many impressive goals. However, he singles out one as his favourite. This memorable strike occurred during Spain’s 2-1 Euro 2024 semi-final victory against France.
His powerful long-range shot equalized the game. Dani Olmo later secured the win.
He stated, “I have three or four favourite goals.” He then clarified, “But if I must pick one, considering its importance and beauty, it’s the goal against France in the EURO.”
The 18-year-old has experienced a meteoric rise in his career. He placed second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, trailing only Ousmane Dembele. Additionally, he won back-to-back Kopa Trophies, recognizing him as the world’s best young player.
