Former Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has urged Kabiru Turaki. Turaki is the new factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). IBB tasked him to genuinely rebuild the party. He also emphasized correcting past mistakes. This is crucial as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Babangida gave this charge during a courtesy visit. Turaki led selected members of the PDP National Working Committee. They visited IBB at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
Discussions at the meeting focused on several key areas. These included party renewal and national stability. Strengthening political structures nationwide was also a topic.
IBB commended the PDP leadership. They showed solidarity with Niger State. The state’s government and people faced a difficult period.
He stressed the PDP’s strong foundation. IBB called it “the most structurally grounded political organisation in Nigeria.” He remembered his effort to create a two-party system. The political class resisted this experiment then.
The former military president advised Turaki. He should prioritize tact and broad consultation. Inclusive leadership is also vital. These steps will help reposition the party.
IBB reflected on Turaki’s earlier remarks. “You admitted the party made mistakes,” IBB noted. “Machinery is already in motion to correct them.” He then advised Turaki, “Use tact and seek people’s opinions.” “Work towards building a peaceful and progressive party.” IBB concluded, “You have the capacity to do it, and I wish you well.”
Babangida shared an anecdote. It showed the lasting influence of political parties. A military administrator in Niger State met a resident. This resident remained loyal to President Shehu Shagari. He supported the then-ruling NPN. The resident was unaware a military government was in power.
This episode highlighted a point. Party structures are deeply embedded in community consciousness.
In response, Turaki thanked the former Head of State. He appreciated IBB’s consistent guidance. Turaki stated the PDP would learn from IBB’s experience. This includes his historical understanding of Nigeria’s political evolution.
Turaki affirmed their commitment. “We are determined to reset this party,” he stated. “We will strengthen its organs.” “We will restore its winning spirit ahead of 2027.”
He explained the visit’s dual purpose. The delegation initially planned an appreciation visit. However, recent abductions occurred in Niger State. This made a condolence visit necessary. They combined both purposes.
