The Accord Party (AP) in Osun State has offered its gubernatorial ticket to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. This offer stands if Adeleke chooses to seek re-election under the party’s banner.
However, the party clarified that neither Governor Adeleke nor his team has formally contacted them. They currently consider speculations about Adeleke using AP for his re-election as mere rumour.
In recent days, AP has been named a possible platform for Adeleke’s 2026 re-election campaign. This arises amidst ongoing internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Accord Party State Chairman, Adekunle Akande, confirmed that two aspirants have already declared interest. They seek the party’s ticket for the August 8, 2026, election. Despite this, Akande stated Adeleke would be warmly welcomed if he decided to join.
“To me, the issue of Governor Adeleke is still just a rumour,” Akande said. “As the state chairman, I have not met with anyone from the government regarding this. We are not the only party being discussed for Adeleke’s potential defection. However, if he chooses to join our party, we will welcome him wholeheartedly.”
Akande further explained, “The doors of our political party are always open. Individuals are free to join or leave whenever they wish. Should Governor Adeleke decide to come, we will grant him a waiver to contest. This is similar to any other person interested in joining. The party already has a standing waiver policy. Currently, two individuals have expressed interest in contesting under our platform, though they have not yet made financial commitments.”
In response, the Osun State chapter of the PDP stated its position. The party clarified that the decision regarding Adeleke’s re-election platform now lies entirely with the Governor himself. This follows his recent return from a foreign trip.
Oladele Bamiji, the Director of Media and Publicity for Osun PDP, spoke in an interview with Punch. He affirmed that Governor Adeleke would issue clear directives. These directives will specify if he plans to remain with the PDP or transition to another party.
“The Governor holds the power,” Bamiji stated. “He has now returned, and we all await his forthcoming directives. Should it become necessary for him to change parties or stay put, he will inform the public.”
