The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has reaffirmed Peter Obi’s readiness to contest. Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer, is willing to run for the Nigerian presidency in 2027.
Tanko, who also serves as the spokesman for Obi’s extensive supporter base, spoke to Sunday Punch on Friday night. His comments came hours after reports surfaced about a possible alliance. This alliance reportedly involved former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camp, looking ahead to 2027.

Addressing the speculation, Tanko emphasized that a strong Southern candidate remains crucial. He believes this is the best strategy to defeat President Tinubu.
However, Tanko demanded clarity from Atiku’s camp. He wants to know their precise expectations from the former Anambra governor. This clarification is necessary before any formal discussions can proceed.
“It all depends on the terms they want Obi to team up with them,” Tanko stated. “Currently, we seek a leader capable of traversing the country. This leader must effectively address our national issues.”
He continued, “Nigerians need a president with mobility and deep insight. Such a leader must understand the country’s challenges. Any collaboration must have a clear objective. If that discussion is on the table, then we can begin to talk.”
“To secure Nigeria, we require a capable leader,” Tanko added. “This leader must possess the ability to fix things. Obi embodies these qualities.”
He further explained, “We must recognize that the Presidency is currently in the South. We need to support Mr. Peter Obi to complete the South’s four-year term. This continuation is vital for our nation right now.”
Tanko also confirmed Obi’s commitment to a single term if elected President.
