Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekeen Nabena, has expressed concerns that the recent defections of governors from opposition parties may not necessarily translate to electoral gains. Instead, he warned that these defections could lead to internal conflicts and confusion within the APC if not managed with care.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Nabena highlighted the potential risks associated with the influx of defecting governors. He questioned whether these governors are joining the APC with genuine intentions or if they have ulterior motives. He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing their backgrounds and the circumstances of their defection.
Nabena pointed out specific states like Bayelsa, Delta, and Enugu, where the APC already faces strong opposition or internal complexities. He warned that integrating defectors without careful planning could disrupt existing party structures and lead to internal clashes.
He stressed that the main challenge is not the defection itself but the management of these new members alongside existing party members. If not handled well, it could lead to confusion and even an implosion within the party, he said.
Nabena also commented on the capacity of the APC national secretariat to handle such integrations, noting its current limitations in authority and structure. He referenced past instances where appointed leaders failed to unify party members effectively.
This warning comes amid other related political developments, including discussions about the tenure of APC executives and potential mergers of opposition parties. These events highlight the ongoing dynamics within Nigerian politics as the 2027 elections approach.
