Sunday Oliseh has dismissed claims of criticising Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. These reports surfaced after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria’s World Cup dream ended in frustration. They suffered a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo. The match had concluded 1-1 before the decisive spot kicks.
This disappointment quickly fuelled speculation. Some claims suggested Oliseh had openly criticised coach Chelle. The former Nigeria captain has now refuted these rumours.

On his X account, Oliseh stated his remarks were twisted. He insisted he never questioned Chelle’s competence.
Oliseh clarified his true concern. It was not about the Malian coach’s ability. Instead, it was the decision to overlook a qualified Nigerian coach for the role. He also acknowledged Chelle’s efforts since taking charge.
“Correction please, I didn’t criticise the coach. Watch the clip again,” he wrote. “I was unhappy he was appointed instead of a qualified Nigerian. But so far, he (Chelle) has done relatively well. Let’s call a spade, a spade!”
With the World Cup journey concluded, focus shifts. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco is next. Nigeria will compete in Group C. They will face Uganda, Tunisia, and Tanzania. This marks the start of their quest for another continental title.
Chelle is expected to announce his provisional squad soon. Preparations for the tournament are gaining momentum.
